Having once been just a hot dog stand in an old trailer, Portillo’s has expanded throughout the mid-west and into the southwest.
In 1963, Dick Portillo invested $1,100 into a small trailer to open the first Portillo's hot dog stand in Villa Park, IL, a Chicago suburb, which he called "The Dog House." Years later, Portillo's has become a brand synonymous with Chicago. In fact, Portillo’s lays claim to being “kind of a big dill- people say it's not a real trip to Chicago unless you eat at Portillo's.” Fortunately, die-hard fans and first-timers alike have their choice of Portillo's restaurants, as they have beefed up to more than 70 locations across several states.
One of Portillo’s newest restaurants is open in Tucson on the site where the old Claim Jumper restaurant was, just east of the El Con Center. While it may have started out as a hot dog stand, Portillo’s now serves an extensive list of hot dogs, beef and sausage sandwiches, soup, salads, desserts and shakes. They take great pride in supporting local charitable causes. In addition, Portillo’s offers catering for large events serving from 50 to 50,000 people.
