Two BASIS schools and University High are among the country's best, according to the most recent rankings by U.S. News & World Report.
BASIS Oro Valley ranked fifth in the state and 32nd nationally. BASIS Tucson North was a close sixth in the state and 34th nationally. Oro Valley ranked eighth nationally among charter high schools.
Tuson's University High School place eighth in the state and 40th nationally. The school offers honors and Advanced Placement classes and partners with the University of Arizona to offer concurrent enrollment in an engineering course. The school has a 99% matriculation rate, and 98% of its student body participates in its Advanced Placement program.
Other honorable mentions in the Tucson area are:
- Catalina Foothills High School - 15th in the state
- Canyon del Oro High School - 68th in the state
- Sabino High School - 70th in the state
Arizona had three of the top five charter high schools in the country - BASIS Scottsdale (No. 3), BASIS Chandler (No. 4) and BASIS Peoria (5th). No. 2 and No. 3 were Haas Hall Academy and Signature Academy, located in Arkansa and Indiana, respectively.
BASIS Scottsdale and Basis Chandler were the only two Arizona schools to rank in the top 20 overall and made the list at No. 3 and No. 18, respectively. BASIS Chandler ranked No. 1 overall in 2018.
The magazine ranked 17,000 schools nationally based on their performance on state-required tests, graduation and how well they prepare students for college.
The data also take into account school enrollment, student diversity, participation in free and reduced-price meal programs, graduation rates and the results of state assessment tests, according to U.S. News.
