Neighborhood spotlight: Downtown's El Presidio

The El Presidio district in Tucson is one of the oldest inhabited sites in the United States. Its earliest inhabitants date back to 700-900 A.D. when the Hohokam Indians called the site home.

And if you are moving to Tucson then you may want to consider making El Presidio your home. It's got character, convenience, lots of history, restaurants, shops, and a variety of architecture from which to choose.

The streets that form El Presidio's boundaries are roughly West 6th Street, West Alameda Street, North Stone Avenue and Granada Avenue. If you have ever been to City Hall, you have been to El Presidio.

Thirty-three acre El Presidio was named for the walled fort once built by Spanish settlers to protect themselves from Apache attacks. Presidio de San Augustín del Tucson is long gone, but Tucson has not forgotten its history, even amidst the hustle and bustle of a modern city.

Today, you will find modern families living in homes that date back to the 1800s. In Old Town Artisans you can find great food, artists selling their wares and more about the history of the fort that once stood on the site. Take in an afternoon at the Tucson Museum of Art and grab a bite to eat at Café a la C'Art inside the historic 1865 Stevens House or El Charro Café.

Around the corner is El Presidio Park nestled between City Hall and the Old County Courthouse. The outdoor space is a gathering place for social events and has a beautiful rose garden, fountain and monument to Battle of the Bulge and veterans memorials.

One of the other advantages of living in the heart of Tucson is that everything you could possibly need or want is just a few minutes away. I-10 and I-19 access is less than 5 minutes away. A trip to the airport is about 15 minutes.

El Presidio's homes range in size, style and price range. Prospective buyers can expect to find Mission Revival and Craftsman bungalows as well as Adobe and Sonoran style construction, some of which date back to mid-1800s. You can even spend a few days at the El Presidio Bed & Breakfast Inn to get a feel for the neighborhood.

Some of the schools in and near El Presidio include El Presidio Day School, Museum School for the Visual Arts, City High School, Tucson High Magnet School, Imago Dei Middle School, and Davis Bilingual Elementary Magnet School.
