Picture it. 1974. A 24 year old U of A student gathers some buddies and heads all the way up to Skagway, Alaska to found the Mighty Moose Melodrama Theater. This name alone probably already has you snickering. One summer of that had them ready to return to the desert where they were able to open the first version of Gaslight Theater in an old red barn at Trail Dust Town. By 1980 they had outgrown Trail Dust Town, and moved to a new facility they built at Sabino Canyon and Tanque Verde. Ten more years and they were able to buy the old Jerry Lewis Theater at Broadway and Kolb, and they were off and running. Once again going hands on, they rebuilt the theater and built Little Anthony’s Diner from the ground up.
If you are old enough to remember Firesign Theater, these guys will warm your heart. Gaslight Theater presents five different shows per year, six nights a week, of musical comedy melodrama, one of America’s favorite theater forms, historically. You can visit their website at https://www.thegaslighttheatre.com/ for lists of performances, ticket availability and online ordering, The site will also inform you of current COVID issue protocols, as well as information about casts and crews, and even info about their Music Hall in Oro Valley (a gem in its own right.)
Still another reason to visit Gaslight is to enjoy some traditional American Diner food at the adjacent Little Anthony’s Diner. Check out Elvis and Marilyn on Saturday evenings, and check their website for the dates of their car shows (days in cool weather and nights in the heat of the summer. Friday nights feature free music concerts. They also offer carhop (curbside service to you younglings) and you can tune in to Little Anthony’s radio station at 109.5 FM. You won’t find any deals better than this in Tucson.
In addition to the hilarity that musical comedy melodramas provide, Gaslight Theater also offers workshops for kids of various age ranges in musical and performing arts in general. Some take place throughout the year and others are summer camp events. Major props to them for these efforts for our future thespians. Throughout the summer, Gaslight Theater also offers their Date Night program. Check it out on their web page as well.
Gaslight Theater is located at 7010 E Broadway, phone 520-886-9428.
The closest Tucson neighborhoods to Gaslight Theater are Double Acres, Vista del Sahuaros and Palo Verde Park.
