The Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood dates back more than a millenia, when the Hohokum natives settled and farmed the area using irrigation from the streams which ran year round then. Current populations date from when Fort Lowell was moved from the Armory Park location downtown to it’s eventual location on what is now Craycroft and Fort Lowell. When the Army closed the fort in 1891, Mexican farmers and ranchers moved in, naming the location El Fuerte (The Fort.)
The current Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood covers 0.96 square miles with a population of approximately 2, 530 people. Architectural Character and Streetscape of the houses in the Fort Lowell Historic Preservation Zone reflect a simple vernacular style with design roots in the Sonoran tradition. Distinct styles include Sonoran Military, Sonoran Ranch, Santa Fe-Sonoran Ranch, and Bungalow Vernacular.
Possibly a major selling point for this neighborhood is that The Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood does not have a Homeowners Association (HOA). There is a 501(c)3 Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood Association, the dues to which are a $25 annual tax deductible donation, and is completely voluntary.
