There is a brand new Hispanic themed restaurant and bar in Tucson, and they don’t serve Mexican food. Mojo Cuban Kitchen and Rum Bar just opened near Grant Road and Campbell, and they opened with a roar. Great Cuban foods, vast array of rums, and quality work crew mean this is a spot you reallly want to visit.
Recently opened in the completely renovated building that housed Viva El Caribe restaurant, Mojo Cuban Kitchen and Rum Bar is a Havana/Little Havana inspired restaurant and bar located just east of Upper Crust Pizza on Grant Road.
“Mojo,” which is pronounced “mo-ho,” and means “Caribbean garlic sauce” in (Cuban) Spanish. The menu is a nod to that tradition, with a dash of modern expression to keep it fun and fresh. Mojo features an authentic line-up of Cuban comfort foods like ropa vieja (old clothes), empanadas, fried yuca, mojo chicken, and the quintessential Cubano sandwich.
At the full-service indoor/outdoor bar, guests will find an impressive array of rums designed both for sipping and for anchoring traditional cocktails all prepared against the backdrop of a regionally inspired soundtrack intentionally curated to accompany the shaking and stirring. Selections include Mojitos, Cuba Libres, Pina Coladas, and, of course, Daquiris, precisely the way Ernest Hemingway prescribed. Semi-professional taste testing swears all of these are world class mixes by the entire array of bartenders.
The walk-up window maximizes convenience when ordering online for pick-up, or when grabbing a quick Cuban coffee and pastelito for breakfast, much like the traditional “las ventanitas” one would find in Little Havana.
Developed and helmed by a team of industry veterans, Mojo is a true collaboration of both local and national talent. Local restaurateurs Nick and Alison Schaffer, along with decorated Tucson chef Janet Balderas and sous chef and native Cuban Patricia Espinosa,
Grant Road to the south stays pretty busy, but there is plenty of parking along the north side of the building, and a few spots on the east side.
With the very recent complete renovation, the interior is bright and roomy, with several different seating modes. When the weather suits, you can even sit outside, on the south side of the bar. When you enter you will find that the front of the house staff are very much sufficient in numbers, competence, friendliness and energy to prevent long waits. The back of the house is also very professionally manned, with a very competent head chef and sous chef overseeing a quality crew. A recent visit by a Cubana senior citizen gives Mojo a double thumbs up!
