Tucson’s Curvy Neighborhood – Colonia Solana

Colonia Solana is a uniquely curvy neighborhood in Central Tucson. Surrounded by Reid Park and Randolph Golf Course, close to shopping, banking, and not far from downtown, this is a highly sought after neighborhood. Homes listed in Colonia Solana do not stay on the market for very long.

Colonia Solana is the first Tucson neighborhood to embrace the natural desert landscape surrounding it. In 1926 Harry E. Bryant purchased the land that Colonia Solana now inhabits, with the desire to build a residential project that incorporated the natural desert setting. Bryan hired landscape architect Stephen Child of San Francisco (who happened to be a Tucson winter visitor). Child was mentored by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, co-designer of Central Park in New York City. Child had a talent for incorporating the existing topography along with native plants to create a natural landscape that highlighted the Arroyo Chico that runs within the property. Child’s design featured an informal, non-symmetrical, curvilinear layout, in contrast to the more formal El Encanto neighborhood just to the north.

The El Con Watertower, which can be seen just south of Broadway, was built in 1928 to serve the neighborhood. In 1932 Roy Place was commissioned to build a structure to hide the utilitarian tower. In 1980 the structure was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was restored in 1994.

Colonia Solana is located in central Tucson, Arizona. This Tucson subdivision is east of S Country Club Rd and south of E Braodway Blvd. Broadway borders Colonia Solana and Reid Park is to the south. The west boundary is Country Club and Randolph Golf Course is to the east. This beautiful subdivision was completed between 1928 and 1949. But the depression and World War II brought a halt to construction.

There are only 100 homes in Colonia Solana and 75 of those homes were built after WWII.

Home styles in Colonia Solana illustrate the architecture of Period Revival and Contemporary styles from the post-WWII era. The natural arroyo running through the subdivision is a major influence on the design of this neighborhood.

Given its central location, homeowners are only a few miles to all downtown Tucson attractions and the  University of Arizona. The restaurants and activities along Broadway are just a short walk or bicycle ride for homeowners in Colonia Solana.

Colonia Solana provides homes on larger lots and tree-lined streets. The Colona Solana subdivision offers a feeling of seclusion in a metropolitan setting that is hard to find. The setting, along with being one of Tucson’s Historic Districts, is hard to beat.

Colonia Solana is a sought after address in the heart of Tucson’s central area. Many Red brick ranch homes of the period following World War II sit on spacious lots along tree line streets. Colonia Solana provides homeowners a unique charm in one of Tucson’s premier historic districts. The nearest neighborhood is El Encanto, just north of the El Con Mall.
