A Beautiful Neighborhood in the heart of the City – El Encanto

An old neighborhood in the heart of the city, El Encanto offers the luxury of newer, northern neighborhoods with all the convenience of city life. Mansions, villas, and mature eucalyptus and palm trees line the streets, which wind their way around a central plaza. While El Encanto feels miles away from the traffic and noise of the city, in reality it's smack dab in the middle of the action. Residents live a stone’s throw from El Con Mall, Randolph Park, the Sunshine Mile, and other retail and culinary hubs. Here, you get all of the privacy and luxury with none of the commute.

Median home value of properties in El Encanto are $715,000. Nearby well reputed neighborhoods are El Montevideo, Poet’s Corner and Broadmoor Broadway. El Encanto is bordered from Broadway to East 5th Street, North to South; and Country Club Road and Guapo Way on the East and West.

The word encanto translates to enchanted or charming, which is quite suitable for this beautiful midtown neighborhood.

When El Encanto was established in 1928, the area of Country Club Road between Broadway Boulevard and 5th Street was on the far east side of Tucson, just outside city limits. El Encanto Estates took advantage of the close proximity to the El Conquistador Hotel, a newly built upscale resort. Unfortunately, the hotel was torn down in the 1960s to make way for the El Con Mall. As the Tucson population grew through the years, the El Encanto area is now in the heart of town, making it a convenient location to the University of Arizona, downtown Tucson, shopping, and restaurants.

Highly rated schools serving the neighborhood are: Sam Hughes Elementary, Mansfield Middle and Tucson Magnet High Schools.

Over the years, there have been very few changes to the original land plat. Most residential lots are larger with over 16,000 square feet. Not bad for being in a major city. The architectural style is dominated by Spanish Colonial Revival homes. Other styles include the Pueblo Revival, Eclectic Revival and Sonoran home styles. Around1941 ranch-style homes made their debut. Southwest architecture is found in nearby Colonia Solana and other nearby neighborhoods. However, the elegant and formal landscaping make the El Encanto Tucson neighborhood very distinctive.

Most of the original plantings have been replaced with low maintenance greenery. However, the Mexican fan palms planted along the streets in 1929 and orginal saguaros are still there. These majestic trees serve as distinct boundaries for the El Encanto Tucson neighborhood.

El Encanto Tucson remains an noted example of early Twentieth Century community planning. It became the sixth Tucson neighborhood to be designated as a Residential Historic District in 1988. This designation has help to protect the area and maintain much of its original character.

Park Place Mall Tucson is close by and offers shopping, dining and theaters.

Today, homes may sell well above $500,000.
