Another near downtown, and U of A, brewery and taproom, with a twist. Screwbean Brewing is also a coffee shop. Offering several of their own brews and some guest taps, for now, plus a nice selection of coffees and teas, and assorted red and white wines. Screwbean also carries pastries from Cafe Francais until they run out daily.
Screwbean’s coffees are provided by Provision Roasters out of Phoenix, with selections rotating quarterly. These beans are ground to order by the cup, and are offered with a selection of milk and alternative milk products.
Opened in May 2023, Screwbean Brewery offers 4 house brews on tap, and a mixture of Pueblo Vida, Moto Sonora and Crooked Tooth brews as well as various flavored seltzers and a wide range of coffee and tea selections. Formerly a Chinese Restaurant, the location has been cleaned up and repainted in a clean looking white.
Seating consists of 5 seats at the bar, 4 high top two seat tables, 5 low top four seat tables, a lounge area with couches and a coffee table and three outside fenced in area covered by mesquite trees with several 4 seat tables.
Speaking of mesuqite trees, Screwbean is a mesquite tree native to this area. There are several of the tree’s seed pods displayed atop the pastry cabinet. And did you know the Screwbean tree is a member of the pea family.
Screwbean’s first event offering is Karaoke nights on Mondays, but they are looking at adding a Salsa Night, a Jazz Night and an always popular Trivia Night.
Foods currently are limited to the aforementioned pastries from Cafe Francais, flavored popcorns, and a variety of snack bags. Food trucks are soon to follow.
Screwbean is located on the Northwest corner of 10th Street and Park, just north of The Mark, so expect evening crowds of UofA students, but they open at 7AM. Screwbean Brewery’s address 103 N. Park Avenue, in the Pie Allen neighborhood, just a couple blocks south of the University, and a block south of The Rock, and close to the Iron Horse and Rincon Heights neighborhoods.
